another aspect of His multi-faceted character. Through understanding His names we can
grow in strength and wisdom just like those who first heard them.

Names of God Glossary
Elohim: Powerful God ? Genesis 1:1. A generic term for deity as well as a proper name for the true
God. Its basic meaning is strong one, mighty leader, supreme Deity. The form of the word is plural,
indicating plentitude of power and majesty and allowing for the N.T. revelation of the triunity of the
Godhead.1
He, the Creator, has made me and owns me, and I am accountable to Him.
El Elyon: God Most High ? Genesis 14:19,20. The name God Most High emphasizes God?s strength
and sovereignty.2
He is Infinitely Sovereign and I am nothing compared to Him.
El Shaddai: God Almighty ? Genesis 17:1. Shaddai is derived from a related word that means
?mountain?, thus picturing God as the overpowering, almighty One, standing on a mountain? abundantly
supplying every need.3
He is omnipotent and I am weak and helpless apart from Him.
Adonai: Lord - Genesis 15:2. Lord, Master, Sovereign.4
In almost all English translations of the Old Testament, the word ?Lord?, with the letters ?ord? in
lower case, translates the word Adonai.
He is the Master and I am His servant.
Jehovah: the LORD ? Exodus 3:14. Jehovah (Yahweh) is the personal proper name of Israel?s God. It
has a twofold meaning: I AM, the active, self-existent One (Ex. 3:14) as well as Israel?s Redeemer who is
faithful to His covenant (Ex. 6:6).5
In almost all English translations of the Old Testament, the word ?LORD?, with the letters ?ORD?
in upper case, translates the word Jehovah (Yahweh).
He is the Self Existent, Self Revealing God and I am His by His Covenant and Promise.
Jehovah-jireh: The LORD Will Provide ? Genesis 22:14. Or ?The LORD will see to it?.6
He the Provider and I am totally dependent on Him to meet all my needs.
Jehovah-rapha: I, the LORD, am your healer ? Exodus 15:26. Rapha means to cure, heal thoroughly,
make whole.7
He is the Healer and I am a broken, helpless, hopeless sinner apart from His healing power.
Jehovah-mekaddishkem: The LORD who sanctifies you ? Exodus 31:13.
He is the Holy One who has set me apart to be His alone.
Jehovah-shalom: The LORD is peace ? Judges 6:24. Shalom defines the wholeness of one?s
relationship with Jehovah God.8
He is the God who is in total control and who gives me rest and confidence in the midst of all conflicts.
